EAST OF WALL
Rated R (1h 37m)
Drama

After the death of her husband, Tabatha - a young, tattooed, rebellious horse trainer - wrestles with financial insecurity and unresolved grief while providing refuge for a group of wayward teenagers on her broken-down ranch in the Badlands. Starring Tabatha Zimiga, Porshia Zimiga. Directed by Kate Beecroft.
Review by Caitlin Stow
The Western is making a quiet comeback in 2025, and this dreamy story about Tabby Zimiga (playing herself in a fictionalized version of her real experience) paints the wild west in soft hues, meditating on the tectonic history of the badlands and the people imbedded in their sands. Tabby is a complicated and raw character, who in all her flaws and mistakes still remains a matriarch for the ages. I was in tears after twenty minutes, and by the end my heart ached for Tabby, wanting more than anything for her to just be ok. The authenticity of the first-time cast mixed with the stunning imagery and unflinching portrait of a hard life in a forgotten corner of America make for a thunderous film about femininity, strength, and what it means to truly care for others.

THE LAST CLASS
Not Rated (1h 11m)
Documentary

American political economist, professor, author, and social media sensation Robert Reich teaches his final “Wealth and Poverty” class to 1,000 students at UC Berkeley, ending a 40-year career that reached 40,000 students. One thousand fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus, the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. Directed by Elliot Kirschner.
Review by Caitlin Stow
As a recent college graduate making the ever-present decision of "to grad school or not to grad school," academia as a way of life has been weighing heavily on my mind. I turned to Robert Reich in this quiet, unassuming documentary, with the hope of finding some inspiration and clarity. Although I am not an economist, I found his lessons on teaching to be profound. Students, he asserts, must be reached through their emotions and intellect together, if we ever hope to sow the curiosity that many jaded and rightfully pessimistic young people resist engaging. He doesn't see teaching as a legacy to leave behind in an effort to be remembered -- he sees teaching as a service in the hope of creating a better tomorrow. Other topics are discussed within the film, and I know others will connect with Reich's thoughts on retirement and aging, or perhaps his political ideology, but for me he provided a much needed reminder that teaching is an artform in and of itself, and to commit to teaching is to commit to the future.
