FAQs
What is The Darkside Cinema?
Created in the spirit of The Avalon Cinema, The Darkside Cinema will be located
above the Book Bin in its new location at Fourth and Madison. We'll be showing
the same fare there as we do at The Avalon Cinema. The Darkside Cinema will
have intimate auditoriums of 49 seats each, offering a wider variety of independent,
quality films. So, when we have a big fat hit film at The Avalon that runs
weeks and weeks filling its 110 seats, you will still have a choice of other
top quality cinematic excitement.

Why did you name it The Darkside Cinema?
Because it's across the street from the Whiteside Theatre. We wanted to acknowledge the Whiteside and differentiate ourselves from them as well. That way if the Whiteside opens again, people won't mistake us for each other. It also shows our hope that the Whiteside will rise again and downtown will become a major entertainment hub.
Will you close the Avalon Cinema?
Nope. The Avalon Cinema will remain as it is, where it is.
When do you open?
Ha. Ha. Hopefully before the men in the white coats with the big butterfly net come and take me away. We are working with the city to get the permits in place to start building. We have a lot of people on our side: people working with us at the planning department, ADA advisors (it'll be more accessible than the Avalon), downtown business owners, the Mountain Spirits from the planet Tralfamador, and so on. The people at Endex Engineering (our engineers...in case we get trains) are working to make things happen as quickly as possible. So, say spring of 2010 ...
Will we have to go through the Book Bin to get to you?
No, but you will be encouraged to spend time there before and after the
movie. The Darkside Cinema will have a separate entrance on 4th Street.
How can we help?
Continue to support the Avalon Cinema. It's how we pay the bills. Also, respond with unrestrained enthusiasm (and cash) when we announce our membership program.
